Nepal’s long-awaited Nagdhunga Tunnel is set to begin trial operation

Nepal’s long-awaited Nagdhunga Tunnel is set to begin trial operation from the second week of May, according to the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport. Commercial operation is expected from the third week of July.

During the trial phase, vehicles will pass without toll charges, while toll collection will begin after full operation starts. The tunnel’s operation has been handed over to Yusin-ART JV, which will deploy around 150 staff, including four Chinese experts.

Officials said remaining technical handover work by JICA is underway and expected to finish within weeks. Once operational, the tunnel is expected to reduce travel time between Nagdhunga and Thankot to around 30 minutes and ease major traffic congestion.
