The Terraces: A Himalayan Luxury Resort

Lakuri Bhanjyang

To create a one of a kind luxury mountain hideaway, far away from everyday life but very close to nature, The Terraces Resort is the brainchild of a Nepali tourism pioneer, Mr. Ang Tshering Sherpa who shifted his idea into a dream and a dream into reality.

Our Story
In 1994, Sherpa bought acres of land after he serendipitously stumbled upon a distant hill of Lakhuri Bhanjyang where there was no road, no electricity nor water. He was tremendously inspired after seeing the magnificent views of the entire Himalayan range and the rapidly developing cities of Bhaktapur, Patan and Kathmandu from atop.

The tented camp was built shortly after in 1996 and was only ever partially operational throughout its existence as it lived through the civil war in Nepal and the hills of Lakhuri Bhanjyang became a hotspot for Maoist activity.

The Tented Camp was operational until 2012 and then finally made way for Ang Tshering’s long awaited visionary project of a luxury resort- The Terraces Resort.

The Architecture
Australian Architect, Tim Linkins is a master of sustainable design who had a profound understanding of Sherpa’s vision. Having lived in Nepal for many years, Linkins had a comprehension of its landscapes and architectural history.

Conceived with minimal intrusion on the scenery in mind, The Terraces Resort marks the smallest possible footprint on the hills of Lakhuri Bhanjyang. The buildings conformed to the landscape and not the other way around but all the while making the most of the views of surrounding wilderness.

The foundation was dug by hand so that each tree was conserved in its original state and the gardens remained naturally indigenous. A low-rise structure that interferes with the landscape as little as possible with roofs filled with water reflecting away the expansive sky & mountains. Cast in neutral hues with its historic monastery inspired architecture of ancient Himalayan Kingdoms, The Terraces Resort is built like a Dzong – the Tibetan word for a fortress monastery.

Dzongs were both a sentry over the vast valleys below and a sanctuary for spiritual introspection. The name “Terraces” comes from its landscape and alters in meaning with spacious balconies in each suite creating an intimate experience & a deep connection with nature.

The Interiors
Inside the vibe is warm and minimal, wooden accents with roomy open-plan spaces dotted with freestanding furnishings, vintage finds, nostalgia from Ang Tshering Sherpa’s own Himalayan home and neutral toned fabrics headline the comfort dialogue.

Designed by Italian interior designer Jurij Salluzzo; the resort feels cozy, bright and modern which perfectly contrasts to the drama of nature framed by each floor to ceiling window.

A luxurious boutique holiday refuge that twines raw mountainous beauty with urban design and kindles an easy-going vibe warmed by a dash of glamor.
